Head over to Anandtech for a complete review and analysis of Intel’s Core 2 Q8400 vs. AMD’s Phenom II 940 Processor.
Intel Quad-core chip is running at 2.66GHz with a 2MB L2 per pair of cores (4MB total) and 164mm Die size. It’s like two Pentium Dual Core processors on a single package.
AMD Phenom II 940 is running at 2.8GHz with 512KB L2 per core and 6MB L3 but the biggest problem is its large 258mm2 die size.
AMD has been struggling for a past three quarter earnings and continues to do so with a lost of over $2.3B , while Intel has been doing quite well.
The problem with AMD is that its current CPU structure is competing against much more advanced processors (particularly smaller die size) and thus showing a lack in performance and poor sales figures. The need to work on their strategy and need to do it fast if they want to stay competitive in this market.
